Ogham Tuesday: Alder

Our next letter in the ogham alphabet is Alder, which speaks of guidance from a trusted source and how that guidance can have a protective or healing effect, not only in the sense of shielding but more in the sense of taking care of what matters.

On a physical level, the leaves can be an insect repellent; and concoctions made from the leaves and bark can ease burns and inflammation. The wood also resists rotting in water so it was often used for making docks, jetties, and structures on stilts in wet areas. Shields made of Alder are mentioned in legends and often named (such as Duban, Chuchulain’s shield).

Alder is a call to our courage and warrior spirit – here, in defense. When we know we are protected, we are more willing to move forward boldly into unknown circumstances and new challenges. In what ways would you use the power of your shield to protect yourself and those who matter most to you?

The Ogham Tuesday series started in 2023 and focused first on introducing each of the standard ogham alphabet in order. We're moving those posts to the blog now, so they can be more easily searched.
