I remember hearing some wisdom about flipping a coin to make a decision: the moment the coin is in the air, you know what result you really want. Today’s new moon divination points out a theme of making decisions, and how two very similar behaviors can still exist in opposition.

Overall Theme: Holly, for choices. Here, its razor edge is a reminder that what we choose NOT to do is often just as important as the actions we take. When it comes to Big Life Changes, it’s also true that we have to stop being one thing before we can transform into another.
Potential & Allies: Birch, with the blessing of beginning again. Whether it’s a new moon cycle a bright morning, or even a fresh breath, the potential of a fresh start is enormous. Use that energy to cut yourself free (with the energy of Holly) from what happened before this very moment.
Static & Obstacles: Honeysuckle, with a warning not to cling so strongly to structure that we choke ourselves off. I usually love seeing Honeysuckle, but here in the Midwestern US, some varieties of honeysuckle are out-competing native plants and effectively killing biodiversity. I think it’s easy to think there is only ONE way to accomplish our goals and, when we invest everything in that, it’s hard to see there being any other way that could be right and good.
Letting Go: Aspen, for fear. Certainly, fear is one of the reasons we resist change. Sticking with the devil we know is false comfort and, again, doesn’t honor the message that Holly brings us: to cut away that which isn’t serving our highest purpose.
Helping Grow: Ivy, for persistence. This is the flip side of the coin, because Ivy carries many of the same correspondences of Honeysuckle. This tenacity isn’t about fighting to stay in the same place. Ivy MOVES. It strives. It reaches.
By the time I write to you next, we’ll be celebrating Lughnasadh (or Lammas, depending on your style) – the first of the harvest festivals! I hope you’re surrounded by people who encourage you to choose bravely, and to strive mightily toward your dreams.
Brightest blessings,
Nicole
P.S. Starting in August, I’ll be offering birthday readings to subscribers. (Still free, still awesomely ogham.) If you’d like to be included, just message me with your birth day and month!
