Ogham Tuesday: Ivy

If ever there were a pair of ogham to illustrate reversals, Vine (from last week) and Ivy would be the two. In many ways, the action of Ivy is similar to Vine, but unmoderated in nature. Much like Vine, Ivy isn’t properly a tree like many of the other ogham. It relies on another tree or structure for support. However, Ivy is definitely capable of killing an oak with overgrowth and has killed in the lore. Call upon Ivy when you need to bind things together, but be cautious of how very EXCELLENT it is at binding, you know?

Ivy also calls on us to reflect on inhibition and whether the restrictions we encounter are of our own making, imposed upon us by forces opposing us, or placed as points of redirection by our allies. It’s also important to consider whether our tenacity is best directed toward overcoming those obstacles or trying new approaches.

The challenge from Ivy, for me, is respecting that I’m not in control – or that I don’t have as much expertise or omniscience as I think I do. In this sense, Ivy can be a warning tree. Good questions to ask when Ivy comes up in a reading include: Where and why am I feeling constrained? Have there been warnings I was too confident to consider fully? How is my tenacity affecting my overall connection with others in this larger pattern? Is there a need for discretion? Where am I unwittingly endangering my goals, myself, or the well-being of others?

The Ogham Tuesday series started in 2023 and focused first on introducing each of the standard ogham alphabet in order. We're moving those posts to the blog now, so they can be more easily searched.
