Ogham Tuesday: Oak

When I see Oak in a reading, it feels to me like Delightful Masculinity. Let me explain.
Oak is a solid door. A strong foundation. Frequently, society tells us that “real” masculinity is the squall on the ocean; I disagree. In my experience, masculinity is the boat. When I’m tired of fighting the waves or when I have too many things to carry on my own, the boat shelters and protects me – much like Manannan mac Lir’s boat, WaveSweeper, with which he rescues children cast into the sea of troubles, shields people fleeing the dangers of life on land, and carries us to our next safe harbor.
Oak is heavy and strong, but can shape itself to a purpose. Items crafted from oak are just as long-lived as the trees, treasured by and serving generations. Oak remembers…and endures.
And there are so many species of oak that I’m still learning to spot them in environments where I wouldn’t expect to see them! Similarly, masculinity has the potential to thrive and support so many energies in our lives, unbound by our limited human expectations for what it’s supposed to look like.
This Father’s Day, as the Oak King and Holly King trade places for the second half of the year, may we honor and embrace the blessings masculinity has to offer, to whatever degree brings us comfort and joy. Blessed be!
The Ogham Tuesday series started in 2023 and focused first on introducing each of the standard ogham alphabet in order. We're moving those posts to the blog now, so they can be more easily searched.
