Ogham Tuesday: Vine

Vine is the first ogham in our next set of five, like the first card in a suit. The lore mentions fruit-bearing vines specifically, of a type that sprout from a main stem but which have a meandering growth habit. Vines can grow to an impressive size with care and support, though they can easily overburden their structure (whether that’s another living tree or perhaps your trellis). As a plant, they are willing to put a lot of effort into reaching upwards and staying off the ground. The lesson here is that, to achieve the certainty of your harvest, you need to plan ahead for future needs and work toward them a little bit each day.
In some traditions (lookin’ at you, Dionysus), Vine teaches through divine inebriation. “In vino veritas,” yes? It’s also one of the few trees that grows in concert with other trees, symbolically uniting what can seem to be unrelated, and teaching us that the effort of uniting and cultivating disparate states of ourselves is both valuable and achievable. My favorite lesson from Vine is to grow with an unbiased attitude. Vine asks, Where can you rejoice in connection?
Finally, Vine is about celebrating the success of hard work. Are you giving yourself and others enough credit for your efforts? As we enter the season of harvest holidays, may we all enjoy and share in the fruits or our labors!
The Ogham Tuesday series started in 2023 and focused first on introducing each of the standard ogham alphabet in order. We're moving those posts to the blog now, so they can be more easily searched.
